Goats and Electric Fences

Trying to keep goats in an area can very difficult. In fact to a goat a fence is really just a suggestion as to where you would like them to be.

New enclosures for the goats

WOW the goats have been causing all sorts of challenges on our new Homestead, with the fences here being setup many years ago for large livestock like horses and cows

The other challenge we have is when there hasn’t been rain the tread in posts on our electric nets won’t go into the soil as it is too hard and we have been in a drought so very little rain.

We have had our herd on chains at different times while we have been here which can cause an entirely different problem with goats getting tangled on branches and each other and pretty much anything.

Any way Gavin has made a star picket and tread in post alternative which we have attached some welded mesh panels… hopefully it keeps tbe girls in.

DIY Goat Hobbles & Squatting Goats

We have had many challenges with goats over the years one of them being a goat that we are trying to milk who insists on kicking and squatting.

I have created a few videos of these challenges and their solutions including how to make DIY Goat hobbles.

Goat hobbles are so easy and cheap to make and are just as easy to use.

I generally find it only takes a goat a few days to settle down into a milking routine but some goats can be a little more stubborn.

Check out our playlist on DIY Goat Hobbles & Squatting Goats to see some of the solutions we have come up with and maybe they might help you as well.
