Determining if a Rhode Island Red is a Chicken or Rooster also known as sexing can be challenging when they are young the birds in the above video are around 16 weeks old.
The Rhode Island Red Rooster
The Rooster, has a larger comb than the hen and is is also a vibrant red colour and his legs are longer and thicker than the hen and you may even be able to see spurs starting to form although this doesn’t guarantee it is a rooster. Around 16 weeks of age is also when the rooster will start crowing although oddly enough this also doesn’t guarantee it is a rooster, some hen will imitate roosters. The guarantee of a rooster is he will develop a lovely flowing whisy tail with black feathers that have a green shimmer that come to a bit of a point.
The Rhode Island Red Hen
The hen has a pale pink and small comb, sge had thinner legs and her tail feathers are short still with a few black feather with a green shimmer contrasting her mahogany body and her tail feathers are more square rounded. To guarantee a hen, she laid an egg 😉.
